Lulu Lais Shows Vulnerability and Honesty in New Single, “Waiting for a Call (Your Interlude)”

Very rarely do songs carry immense amounts of emotion from the first chord that is played. Lulu Lais captures a feeling of longing and nostalgia from the first second in her newest single, “Waiting on a Call (Your Interlude).” The song was released on September 8th and is very reminiscent of early Kali Uchis: dreamy R&B with instrumentals that feel like they’re surrounding you. Despite the song being only around two minutes long, there is such a sense of honesty pouring from the lyrics. The first words out of Lais’ mouth are “Waiting for a call that may never come.” Right from the start, the Canadian singer is upfront and honest about the reality of the situation. She knows that this person may not call, but she also knows that she will inevitably still sit and wait regardless if she knows the most likely outcome.

There is also a lot of awareness coming from the title of the song, specifically calling it “your” interlude. While we are unsure who “you” is, Lais is using this song as a signifier that this person has a lot of power over her. It is incredibly self-aware to realize what is going on in a situation where she could easily be so blind. She knows what is going on and does not try to hide it. When writing “Waiting for a Call,” Lais said she channeled both her own experiences as well as what she has observed from others.

“A few different instances inspired me to write this track, both in terms of circumstances I have personally faced, and situations I have observed others go through,” said Lais. “This song is for that person hurting from being treated like less by someone they care about.”

“Waiting for a Call (Your Interlude)” is available now on all streaming platforms.
