Pop music needs to begin being honest; we need more vulnerability from pop artists to start a new wave of personal pop music. That’s exactly what Julia Paymer aims to do — starting with her debut single, “Therapy.” In an emotional song reminiscent of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License,” Paymer opens up about a relationship that emotionally and mentally deteriorated her. She sings, “You turned me into somebody else / six months kind of messed with my health,” and says this person made her need therapy. Yet, at the end of this struggle, Paymer comes out on top and learns to let go. At the end of the song, she says “Since we have been over / I’ve been feeling just fine,” showing that she will not let this person take over her life, her personal growth, and dictate her feelings.

Paymer not only shows her maturity in the situation, but she also shows she is an artist to watch with such a compelling and vulnerable debut single. “This is a song for the broken hearted people to know they’re going to be okay,” she said when asked about “Therapy.”

Paymer is a current senior at Belmont University studying songwriting and music business. She is Nashville based but LA raised and hopes to have an artist career while continuing to write. “Therapy” is the first of a series of singles to be released in early 2021.

“Therapy” now available on all major streaming platforms.
